If you live in a low-income household, you could take advantage of free Internet in the near future. US President Barrack Obama has launched an initiative to increase broadband and Internet connection across 27 cities. This means that 275,000 households will benefit from the expansion. When the plan takes effect, around 200,000 children will benefit.
The announcement came from the White House after the President’s Council of Economic Affairs realized that less than half of the households in the low-income percentages have no access to the Internet.
Advantage to students
According to a report by the Council, the current lack of Internet makes it hard for students to do homework after school. The program will also include literacy programs and technical training via the Internet.
In fact, some cities will benefit from planning training and tailored college readiness. For example, students of HUD housing will gain free online SAT practice resources from College Board.
Obama’s commitment to Internet
The current development, ConnectHome is the newest initiative by Obama’s government to increase Internet access in the US. In mid 2013, his administration rolled out a similar initiative dubbed ConnectED aiming to connect 99% of K-12 students to the internet by 2018.
